Defense Plays a Slightly different roll. Rather than Pokemon generally tolerating attacks they're hit by, there is now an option of Dice Roll known s Defend. This is where the Defense and Sp. Def Stat Rating come in. If the Defend Succeeds and the Defensive Stat Targeted hasa + then knock off a fifth of the taken damage. If ~ then knock off a tenth. If - just knock off 5 damage from the attack. If the attack isn't divided evenly by those numbers, round up to the nearest whole number. If the Defend fails, your pokemon takes all of the damage. Again. All Math is done by me. Don't worry about it. Anyway, here's an Example Battle.

Example Battle
Premaseed lvl 1 versus Popple lvl 1
Popple uses Bubble base 16
Premaseed defends and succeeds...
Sp. Defense Rating ~
16x0.1=1.6(Round up to 2) 16-2=14
Premaseed takes 14 damage

Another thing to note is that if your defense is lowered by an opponent then the following will happen.

If the targeted defensive stat is +, it goes down to ~ and if ~ it goes down to -. If it's already minus, there's a different story going on. If it's already - and your defend succeeds, then that - becomes non-existant and it's like your defend never happened. Then you take all of the damage regardlessof whether or not you defended. The Defensive Stats, after becoming non-existant, become negative. Then you begin to take more damage. The stat can only be dropped 5 times but for each time dropped, you take 5 more damage and this applies to just taking damage in general, not just when defending. That means you can take up to 25 extra damage if your opponent pays close enough attention to offing that defense so stay sharp.

This mechanic has changed as well but very little. First of all, there is no longer a defend dice. Now there is a Stamina meter and this dictates how well this works. If you defend, you pokemon focuses on its defensive stats. The first time, the opponent's attack will only do Quarter the damage it would have originally. But as the meter lowers, it takes more and more damage (by intervals of 5) and when the meter drops to 10, Defend will begin to fail all together. The Meter starts at 60.
